If your Plan is to be effective it needs to be
practiced and tested.

The following are the different ways to test your plans effectiveness and practice emergency skills and procedures.

Drills:

  • Usually a single function event, used to practice a trained, manipulative skill.
  • Focuses on building or refreshing skills and is based on your organizations standard operating procedures.

Table top exercise:

  • Scenario driven exercise, can be real time or informational.
  • Focuses on the emergency management team and their rolls and responsibilities.
  • Used to practice emergency management skills and build confidence in the Emergency Operations Center process.

Functional exercise:

  • Scenario driven, real time exercise.
  • Used to practice specific parts of the plan.
  • Emergency management or activity oriented.
  • Used to practice management or activity skills and to build coordination and team work.

Full scale exercise:

  • Simulation of actual disaster event.
  • Real time exercise that includes props, equipment & special effects.
  • Used to practice all aspects of your emergency operations plan and to build team work and communications between all areas of your organization.
  • Requires a high degree of training, organization and planning.
